This 'Chain Gang' Has the Best Seat in Football
Meet the 'Chain Gang'
— -- Football is famously a game of inches and to measure those inches there is a chain crew that stands in the heart of the action on every single play. They’re identified by the bright orange yard markers that stand at the line of scrimmage and the first down line. Not much else is known about the chain crew, or as they’re commonly known, the "chain gang."
We met up with the "chain gang" before the 2016 college national championship in Glendale, Arizona, and it turns out they’re as much of a team as the ones on the field.
The veterans of the chain gang were friends in college at Arizona State University, where they continue to work the sidelines. They're also the crew for the Arizona Cardinals after the NFL franchise moved to Arizona.
“There isn’t any chain crew in the world more experienced than we are,” said 45-year veteran Dave Gerlach, who has worked the sidelines for eight national championships, three Super Bowls and a Pro Bowl.
“We’ve all been here for quite a while now and it’s a great job,” said Gerlach. "We all get asked 'How can I get that job?'"
