— -- Dexter Fowler was an unexpected addition to Chicago Cubs spring training Thursday, as the team announced that the two sides had agreed to a one-year deal.

Fowler's contract includes a mutual option for 2017. The center fielder rejoins the Cubs after spending the 2015 season with them, batting .250 with a career-high 17 home runs and 46 RBIs. He also struck out a career-high 154 times.

The signing comes two days after Fowler had been linked to a deal with the Baltimore Orioles. ESPN and media reports had said Fowler and the Orioles had agreed to a three-year deal pending a physical.

Fowler tweeted about 2016 being the Cubs' year shortly after the signing was announced.

The speedy, switch-hitting Fowler, who turns 30 in March, is a career .267 hitter with 114 steals over eight seasons with the Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros and Cubs.

To make room for Fowler on the 40-man roster, the Cubs placed left-handed pitcher Zac Rosscup on the 60-day disabled list due to left shoulder inflammation.

ESPN Cubs reporter Jesse Rogers and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
