— -- BOSTON -- A woman bleeding from the head was removed from the Fenway Park stands after being struck by a broken bat during the game between the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox, and police say her injuries are life-threatening.

Boston police spokesman David Estrada says all or part of the bat hit her during the game Friday night between the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox.

The fan was carried off on a stretcher after the top of the second inning Friday night. She was hit when Oakland's Brett Lawrie broke his bat on a groundout to second base for the second out of the inning.

After the third out, the game was delayed while the fan was tended to in the stands between home plate and the third base dugout. She was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center.

"It's a scary moment," manager John Farrell said after the game. "All you can think about is a family coming to a ballgame and hopefully get three hours of enjoyment, and unfortunately with how close our stands are to the field of action, an accident like this tonight is certainly disturbing. Our thoughts and concerns are with her and her family."

Center fielder  Mookie Betts, who was waiting to hit when the fan was stretchered away, said he saw and heard what was happening.

"You just hope and pray everything will be OK," he said. "Never seen anything like this. First for everything, hopefully the last."
