Hole-by-hole analysis of Tiger's return

ByFARRELL EVANS

— -- It's been 109 days since Tiger Woods hit a shot in competition. After microdiscectomy surgery on his back, the former world No. 1 tees it up at the Quicken Loans National.

So how will his self-described rusty game look against the PGA Tour's best? ESPN.com's Farrell Evans is on the grounds at Congressional Country Club and is following Woods, who started on the 10th hole, for his first round Thursday. Also, get the latest scores and see if anyone can take the lead away from Greg Chalmers.

No. 9, par-5, 636 yards; Woods' score: Par, +3 (74) for the round

Tiger Woods finished his first round since back surgery in late March with a 3 over 74. Not a horrible start. Rusty but healthy at least.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 8, par-4, 354 yards; Woods' score: Birdie, +3 for the round

Tiger is finding a little momentum late in the round. At the short par 4 8th, he made a short birdie putt to get to 3 over.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Jordan Spieth is talented yet you wouldn't know it by his ball striking. No telling how good he can be once he gets better tee to green

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Tiger hasn't shown any signs of pain or discomfort with his back.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 7, par-3, 173 yards; Woods' score: Birdie, +4 for the round

On the par 3 7th hole, Tiger made a. 4 footer for birdie to get to 4 over after 16 holes.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Tiger is 5 over after 15 holes in the first round of the Quicken Loans at Congressional C.C

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 6, par-5, 555 yards; Woods' score: Par, +5 for the round

After the poor wedge at the 6th, Tiger had a nice two putt for par. Not what he was thinking on the tee. His drive found the deep rough.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Just heard Tiger's first F bomb after his fourth or fifth mediocre wedge. This time at the par 5 6th hole. He is mad!

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

At least 20 people have asked me if I wore green and black today to match Tiger's ensemble. Just a coincidence!

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 5, par-4, 413 yards; Woods' score: Par, +5 for the round

Tiger can't stand progress. Had a baby wedge to the short par 4 5th hole and let it fall off the false front. Made easy par look hard.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 4, par-4, 470 yards; Woods' score: Birdie, +5 for the round

Finally at No. 4, Tiger hits an approach to four feet and stops the bleeding with a birdie to get back to 5 over for the day.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

It's early at the Quicken Loans, but Tiger is in last place at the moment.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 3, par-4, 466 yards; Woods' score: Bogey, +6 for the round

Tiger just made his SEVENTH bogey of the day at No. 3 to go to 6 over after 12 holes .

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Tiger made a very timid pass at 3 on a little knockdown uphill approach from the fairway that found the green side bunker. One of his worst

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 2, par-3, 233 yards; Woods' score: Bogey, +5 for the round

At No. 2, Tiger made his sixth bogey of the day after missing a 9 foot par putt. He is now 5 over for the round.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Tiger certainly hasn't gotten favorable scoring conditions for his return.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 2 at Congressional, a 233 yard par 3 beast ! TW just hit a hybrid that was snatched out of the sky by a nasty swirling wind. Short left.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 1, par-4, 402 yards; Woods' score: Par, +4 for the round

At 1, Tiger's 10th hole, he made a routine par after a very timid first putt that was downhill, but a lot slower than he thought it was.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Congressional is in U.S. Open level condition -- at least the way the Open was set up the 60 years before this year at Pinehurst.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Tiger 's group was a combined 12 over on their first 9 holes.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 18, par-4, 523 yards; Woods' score: Bogey, +4 for the round

Tiger finished with a 4 over 39 on his first nine holes after missing an 8 foot par putt at 18. Tough start in rehab assignment

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

From tee to green, Tiger looks fine. It's his short game that's failed him. Early in the week, he said his short game was good.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 17, par-4, 437 yards; Woods' score: Bogey, +3 for the round

At 17, Tiger hit another poor chip that he could have putted. Then he missed the par putt to go to 3 over. Sloppy.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

You're not going to make many birdies with mid irons in your hands to tough pins. Don't care who you are.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Tiger's looks comfortable. Congressional is playing long and with the rough you have to be really accurate. And take advantage where you can.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 16, par-5, 579 yards; Woods' score: Par, +2 for the round

Tiger misses 7 footer for birdie at the par 5 16th. Missed opportunity.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 15, par-4, 490 yards; Woods' score: Bogey, +2 for the round

Very sloppy bogey at 15 for Tiger. Left chunky chip shot well short of pin to fall back to 2 over.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

The rough is serious here at Congressional. Tiger, Day and Spieth all found it at 15.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 14, par-4, 467 yards; Woods' score: Birdie, + 1 for the round

@14, Tiger makes first birdie of his first round to get back to 1 over. His approach was inside 10 feet after a great drive

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

After 2 bogeys and 2 pars, @TigerWoods makes his first birdie in return to the @PGATOUR @QLNational Scores: http://t.co/O6Ygf9jh8l

- ESPN Golf (@ESPNGolf) June 26, 2014

No. 13, par-3, 193 yards; Woods' score: Par, +2 for the round

@the par 3 13th, Tiger had his first really good birdie look of the day, but his putt slid just past the hole. He looks fine. Same ole Tiger

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Jordan Spieth and Jason Day are playing with Tiger. Spieth seems a little nervous to me. With Tiger, he's 2 over but struggling more.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 12, par-4, 471 yards; Woods' score: Par, +2 for the round

@12 Tiger made his first par of the first round. Slim birdie chance after hitting fairway wood off the dogleg left.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

In @QLNational Rd. 1, @TigerWoods opens bogey-bogey. On "plus" side, partners @JordanSpieth, @JDayGolf do too. Track: http://t.co/K9BAAiaPBw

- ESPN Golf (@ESPNGolf) June 26, 2014

It's a beautiful morning here at Congressional. A little breezy and humid.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 11, par-4, 489 yards; Woods' score: Bogey, +2 for the round

At the 11th after a good drive, Tiger three-putted to start his round with two bogeys. His first putt was woefully short!

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

No. 10, par-3, 218 yards; Woods' score: Bogey, +1 for the round

Tiger starts his comeback with a bogey at the par 3 10th. Didn't get up and down from a bunker. Tough narrow green to hit.

- Farrell Evans (@EvansESPN) June 26, 2014

Excited for my man today! #hesback @TWFoundation #goTW

- lindsey vonn (@lindseyvonn) June 26, 2014

Tiger Woods is off at 8:12 AM EST. He's having a nice warmup. Let's see what he does. I will be with him all 18 here at Quicken
