— -- Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer allowed a hit to  Carlos Gomez leading off the seventh inning, spoiling his attempt at a perfect game Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Gomez hit a soft fly to shallow right field that fell just beyond the reach of second baseman Anthony Rendon. Scherzer watched the ball drop, then turned away.

Scherzer finished with a career-high 16 strikeouts, throwing a one-hitter for the Nationals' 4-0 victory.

Scherzer is 7-5 with a 1.93 ERA in his first season in Washington after signing a seven-year, $210 million contract in the offseason.
