— -- The Washington Nationals acquired closer Jonathan Papelbon on Tuesday from the Philadelphia Phillies, a league source has confirmed to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

Philadelphia will receive Double-A pitcher Nick Pivetta in exchange for Papelbon, according to multiple reports.

A major league source told ESPN that Washington will pay Papelbon the major league minimum -- prorated from $507,500 -- for the rest of this season.

The Nationals will also pick up his 2016 contract option in exchange for Papelbon lowering the number owed from $13 million to $11 million, with $3 million of the $11 million deferred.

Papelbon, 34, has publicly stated that he would not waive his no-trade clause to join a team where he would not be the closer.

According to the reports, the Nationals will demote closer Drew Storen to a setup role and give Papelbon the closer's role. Storen is 29 for 31 in save opportunities for the NL East-leading Nationals.

Papelbon is Philadelphia's career saves leader with 123 and is 17 for 17 in save chances this season. Papelbon also is Boston's saves leader with 219.

Entering Tuesday's games, the Phillies are a major league-worst 37-63. They signed Papelbon to a $50 million, four-year deal in November 2011.

Information from ESPN's Jim Bowden and The Associated Press was used in this report.
