— -- BALTIMORE -- Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith suffered a season-ending left Achilles injury in Sunday's 44-20 win over the Detroit Lions, confirming the team's worst fears.

"That's tough," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "He will be out for the rest of the year."

Smith fell to the ground late in the second quarter while trying to cover a deep route and writhed in pain with his face in the grass. Harbaugh came out onto the field and could be seen telling him, "I love you."

Rookie first-round pick Marlon Humphrey replaced Smith and was beaten for two deep passes, which were basically jump balls with Lions receiver Marvin Jones Jr.

"The secondary is the strength of our team," safety Eric Weddle said. "So, we're not going to sit back and be sorry for ourselves."

Smith has been dealing with an Achilles injury for most of the season. In an effort to rest it, he would practice only once or twice a week.

Still, Smith was having what many considered his first Pro Bowl season. Through 11 weeks, he led the league with a 37 passer rating on passes thrown against him, according to Pro Football Focus.

"He has played at an All-Pro level this year," Harbaugh said. "[But] we have a lot of depth. We have a lot of good, young players. We'll step up, and we'll still play at a really high level in the secondary. I'm really confident in that."
