— -- The Orlando Magic have reached a deal in principle with Frank Vogel for Vogel to become the team's new head coach, the Orlando Sentinel is reporting.

Sources had told ESPN.com on Wednesday night that the Magic believed they had emerged as Vogel's preferred destination and were positioned to quickly complete a deal with him if their coaching search continues to progress in its current direction.

The Magic moved quickly in their search to find a replacement for Scott Skiles, who resigned as the team's coach last week.

Team officials sped up their search because Vogel had received interest from three other teams with coaching vacancies: the Memphis Grizzlies, New York Knicks and Houston Rockets.

Vogel, 42, fits the profile Magic officials set for Skiles' successor: a coach who emphasizes defense and relates well to players.
