— -- St. Louis Cardinals leadoff hitter Matt Carpenter has signed a six-year contract extension worth $52 million, according to multiple media reports.

The Cardinals have not confirmed the deal but have scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. ET on Saturday morning from their spring training facility in Jupiter, Fla.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported earlier this week that Carpenter and the Cardinals were closing in on a long-term extension.

Carpenter, 28, enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2013, batting .318 with 11 home runs and 78 RBIs while leading the majors with 126 runs scored.

An All-Star second baseman last season, Carpenter will shift to third base this season for the Cardinals, who plan to use rookie Kolten Wong as their primary second baseman.

Carpenter has played parts of three seasons with the Cardinals, batting .306 with 17 homers and 124 RBIs in 278 career games.
