— -- CEDAR CITY, Utah -- DeAngelo Newsom scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and was one of five Southern Utah players to score in double figures in the Thunderbirds' 71-49 victory over Lewis & Clark on Tuesday night. Rand Janes and Jason Baker each had 12 points, Tim Gainey had 11 and Dallas Rensch scored 10 for the Thunderbirds (1-1). John Mietus had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Pioneers. Danny Winchester scored 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the 3-point line for the Pioneers (2-1), who didn't attempt a free throw until 2:30 remained in the game. The Thunderbirds led the Pioneers 49-37 with about 11 minutes remaining, then put the game away with a 16-4 run. The Thunderbirds led 21-20 with 9:08 remaining in the first half, then took off on a 12-3 run to take a 33-23 halftime lead.
