— -- WWE was hoping to go big Sunday by holding WrestleMania 32 on one of the world's biggest stages.

Mission accomplished.

WWE surpassed its own 29-year-old record as 101,763 fans attended the event at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

"We are thrilled that we made history tonight at WrestleMania, further cementing its place as one of the top sports and entertainment events in the world," WWE chief brand officer Stephanie McMahon said in a news release. "We thank our fans, the  Dallas Cowboys and the entire Jones family for their overwhelming support."

Sunday's event outstripped the previous WWE attendance record from WrestleMania 3 in 1987, when 93,173 fans filled the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit. It also became the highest grossing live WWE event, with $17.3 million to beat the $12.6 million from last year's WrestleMania at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

"On behalf of the Dallas Cowboys organization, we congratulate WWE on their historic achievement," Cowboys chief brand officer Charlotte Jones Anderson said in the statement. "WrestleMania was an incredible spectacle like none other, and we look forward to hosting it again at AT&T Stadium."
