-- Google Apps users are about to receive an update that will allow them to link an Analytics accounts with their Apps account. This will allow administrators to access usage data statistics for the Docs and Sites applications.
The move comes as Google prepares its own web-based office apps to compete with Microsoft's forthcoming online version of Office. Analytics for Google Apps will impact the Standard, Premier, Education and Partner editions and will only show up if you have the US English language selected.
Last week, Google also made available three new test features for Apps (Moderator, Code Review and Short Links) that--together with the new Analytics implementation--could help administrators in tracing which of their internal sites or documents are most popular with users.
Administrators can link their Analytics accounts with Apps by going to the "Advanced Tools" tab in the administrative panel and clicking "Setup Google Analytics". The Analytics profile ID number can then be entered and Google will begin collecting usage data.
The new features will not affect everyday Apps users, but they will certainly make administrators' lives easier. And with Microsoft on its tail, it's no wonder Google is pushing out more features, so it can gain a larger user base before Office 14 is released sometime next year.
