ORONO, Maine -- New media students at the University of Maine have developed a prototype of an electronic device that's designed to bring together people with similar interests and personal characteristics.

The Friend Finder contains a series of red LED lights that are programmed to turn on when a prospective match who also has the device comes within 30 feet.

Sean Collins of York, a member of the class that developed the device, says it's a way to establish a personal connection while using technology.

While the Friend Finder might be used in dating situations, the students see other applications that may be more practical. They say it could be used at business conventions to match people with similar areas of interest or at freshman orientations to bring together like-minded college students.
