Facebook users' vote far short of threshold

NEW YORK -- Facebook invited the 200 million people who regularly use the site to vote on its governing documents. But only 600,000 cast a ballot, the social networking site said late Thursday.

Facebook launched the vote after concerns erupted about who controls users' personal information. The site gave its members until Thursday afternoon to choose either the current terms of use, or a revised set of documents that reflect input from users over the past 30 days.

More than 74% of voters chose the revised set of documents. But Facebook said the vote would be binding only if 30% of the site's active users voted. That would be 60 million people.

Facebook said that it would have auditors review the post, and then would likely adopt the confirmed documents. "We'd hoped to have a bigger turnout for this inaugural vote, but it is important to keep in mind that this vote was a first for users just like it was a first for Facebook. We are hopeful that there will be greater participation in the future," the company said in a statement.
