June 13, 2011 — -- In today's TechBytes, a shadow Internet helps democracy movements, Apple recalls a few iPad 2s and the iPhone goes into space.

Shadow Internet: One of the first moves a repressive government makes when faced with dissent is to shut down the Internet. When that happens, the State Department will be ready to move in and provide an alternative uncensored Internet service.

The program includes Internet-in-a-suitcase equipment that can be carried across a border and set up quickly.

Recall of IPad 2: Apple is recalling a small number of Verizon iPad 2s.The affected devices were incorrectly coded, making it difficult to log onto the Verizon network.

An Apple spokeswoman says all the recalled units will be replaced with new ones.

IPhone in Space: Next month, a couple of iPhones will be launched into space aboard the final shuttle flight. They'll be used to conduct several experiments, which can be followed down here on Earth by downloading the same app.

And, no, neither ET nor the astronauts will be phoning home: The calling functions have been disabled.
