    Destin has a year-round population of just over 11,000, but that number swells in the winter, and even summer, months as tourists flock to the emerald green waters of this once-small fishing village. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection reports over 80 percent of the Emerald Coast's 4.5 million visitors each year visit Destin, making it one of the state's most popular tourist destinations.

    While Destin offers plenty in the way of shopping, dining, boating and entertainment options, natives never leave, and tourists return year after year, to relax in the beach town's slow pace. Destin has maintained its relaxed, beach feel since its founding in 1850 by Captain Leonard Destin, a New London, Conn., fishing master for whom the town is now named.
