Mark Sorrill and his colleagues launched the inaugural Pop-Up Hotel event outside of the Glastonbury music festival in 2011. “It was a natural fit, as I am from Somerset and have grown up only a few miles from the festival site,” said Sorrill, who previously designed resorts in the Cayman Islands. </p>

“I hold dual nationality,” said Sorrill. “Although I was born and raised in Somerset in the UK and am very proud of my English heritage, I am equally proud and lucky enough to call myself a Caymanian.” </p>

While living in the Cayman Islands for 12 years Sorrill considered what he wanted visitors to experience when they visited Cayman. The resulting design was a cluster of thatched hut rooms “dotted along the coastline, joined by natural green vegetation walking corridors lined with indigenous flaura/fauna.”</p>

“Upon returning to the UK, I evolved those thoughts to create a hotel with similar principles,” said Sorrill. “But one major difference in that The Pop-Up Hotel is transient and moves from place to place.” </p>

Set in a rural location with very light infrastructure, the facilities are basic in comparison with luxury hotels, focusing on comfortable surrounding and superlative service.</p>

“At the end of the day, a few extra channels on the TV, surround sound or marble counter tops don’t necessarily make the most memorable stay,” says Sorrill. “It is the location or event and connection to that environment that makes it really memorable and a great experience to savour.”</p>

Variations and evolutions of Pop-Up Hotels are being considered for different areas around the world. “We are currently looking at sites in the Maldives, Caribbean and the States,” said Sorrill.</p>

With accommodations for just over 1,000 guests, The Pop-Up Hotel has been adapted throughout the year from music festival lodgings to wedding sites to corporate treats.</p>

“We are currently looking at building a corporate hotel for a famous brand at St. Andrews next year for the Open championship,” said Sorrill. “Later this year our Barefoot Pop-Up is in stunning Cornwall perched up above a wonderful secluded beach.” </p>

Hotel amenities range from sister company, The Pop-Up Motel’s festival accommodation listed at $255.05 and extend up to the Tenthouse suite in the Hotel which has 2 bathrooms, 4 bedrooms in a luxury tented 2,000 sq.ft. pavilion for $17,003 for the weekend with eight guests.</p>
