Tourism update: Houston and Galveston

— -- Major visitor facilities and other tourist infrastructure in Houston weathered Hurricane Ike's punches and are expected to be operating on a normal schedule after a city-wide curfew is lifted Saturday.

Power was on in downtown and streets were being cleaned on Tuesday, three days after Ike hit. But about 66% of homes were still without power, and area hotels, though open, were filled primarily with residents lacking electricity. The George R. Brown Convention Center sustained superficial damage and regularly scheduled shows and events will resume Monday, said tourism spokeswoman Lindsey Brown.

Houston's other major convention center, Reliant Park, suffered wind damage and isn't expected to re-open until Oct. 8.

Sports venues Toyota Center and Minute Maid Park will be hosting scheduled events.

But while Houston is snapping back, it may be months before Galveston, 50 miles south, recovers from the Category 2 hurricane's 110-mile winds.

In Bay Area Houston, halfway between Houston and Galveston, the Space Center Houston attraction is set to re-open Saturday.
