— -- "Seeing the sights is no longer enough. Experiential travelers want to venture beyond the beaten tourist paths and dive deeper into authentic, local culture."

That's just part of the mission statement of the just-launched travel magazine Afar.

The first issue features articles on newly trendy East London through the eyes of a resident, marine conservation programs and an apprenticeship with a baguette maker in Paris. Veteran travel writer Tim Cahill writes about the kindness of strangers he has met on the road.

Afar, founded by two well-traveled entrepreneurs successful in other fields who saw the need for a read for "cultural explorers," arrives at a tough time for travel mags shrinking ads and vacation budgets. Its target audience: passport holders 35 to 55 with a $160,000 average household income. It's due six times a year; a free trial issue is available via afar.com.
