— -- The Georgia father of 15-month-old twins who died after being left in a hot car Thursday was arrested overnight, police said.

Asa North was arrested and charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of reckless conduct, said Carrollton Police Department's Captain Chris Dobbs.

Police responded Thursday to calls of two unresponsive children at a duplex in Carrollton -- located approximately 50 miles west of Atlanta.

When officers arrived at the scene, the father was in the back of the apartment building holding the twins in the pool, attempting to cool them off, said Dobbs.

Neighbors had heard screaming and yelling, and saw the father running toward the pool with the children, Captain Dobbs said.

The girls were then transported to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, where they were both pronounced dead.

Police said the girls' father was being interviewed, and according to ABC Atlanta affiliate WSB, the mother was in Atlanta at the time of the incident. A vehicle, with two car seats, was impounded outside the apartment building.

The deaths are being investigated as a hot car death, said police, although the official cause of death remains to be determined.

WSB reported that temperatures in the area were in the 90s Thursday.

It was not immediately known if North had a lawyer.
