Shark Kills San Fran Surfer Off Mexico

The 24-year-old man bled to death after being attacked by a gray shark.

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) -- April 30, 2008 — -- A San Francisco man has been killedafter being attacked by a shark while surfing off Mexico's southernPacific coast.

Mexican authorities say the 24-year-old man bled to death afterbeing attacked by a gray shark Tuesday near the beach resort ofIxtapa.

The U.S. embassy in Mexico could not immediately confirm theman's name, but he's been identified by a local newspaper as AdrianRuiz.

Mexican authorities say the attack came as the victim wassurfing with another American.

The other man was not injured.

Shark attacks are relatively rare in Mexico.

In 2006, the International Shark Attack File at the FloridaMuseum of Natural History reported only one attack in Mexico, whichwas not fatal.
