Allegedly Fatigued FedEx Driver Caught on Camera Causing Eight-Car Pileup
The driver appeared to swerve into multiple lanes of traffic.
— -- An allegedly sleepy driver behind the wheel of a FedEx truck caused a terrifying eight car pileup in Nashville, Tennessee, police say.
A cellphone camera caught the incident unfolding Thursday morning as the FedEx truck veered into the middle lane and slammed into a vehicle before going out of control.
“It all happened so fast,” Thomas Mayhew, a driver involved in the accident, told ABC Nashville affiliate WKRN-TV. “The FedEx truck hit me in the back, pushed me into the car in front of me, which pushed him under a semi.”
Military Sgt. Richard Crosson, who was the driver pushed under the tractor-trailer, said, “There was just no time to think.”
In all, eight vehicles were wrecked. Crosson was able to get out of his car and rushed to get another driver, whose car was in flames, out safely.
“You just don’t hesitate in something like this,” he told WKRN. ” I don’t know. He might not have been around if I would have hesitated because it was burning pretty good.”
Police cited the FedEx driver with fatigue.
FedEx told ABC News that all drivers are “expected to obey all traffic laws in safely operating their vehicles.”
About 100,000 crashes a year result from driver fatigue, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Everyone survived Thursday’s crash.
