Huge Fire Breaks Out at Pennsylvania Chemical Plant
Explosions were reported, and residents were asked to shelter in place.
— -- A huge fire broke out this morning at a Pennsylvania chemical plant, sending smoke and flames rising into the night sky with explosions reported.
The fire was reported at 3:27 a.m. today at Miller Chemical, located in Conewago Township, Adams County, about 40 miles southwest of the state capital of Harrisburg.
Explosions were reported and nearby residents were asked to shelter in place, according to the Conewago Township Police Department.
Police do not believe anybody was located in the building at the time of the fire.
Dozens of firefighters, emergency management and hazmat crews visited the scene, working to contain the fire, according to ABC affiliate WHTM-TV.
Shortly after 2:40 p.m, the Adams County Emergency Management Agency said that the fire was under control but the flames are not fully extinguished yet. They reported that active battling of the fire will resume after several hours of controlled burn.
"With the pond and pumps in place, responders will knock down the remaining exterior walls of the facility and again use water in an attempt to extinguish the fire," the agency stated in a press release.
In spite of the nature of the fire, the EMA reported that continued air monitoring has not found toxic chemicals released into the air by the fire.
