Oregon Restaurant Employees Take Down Man Accused of Bomb Threat
Surveillance video shows the heated exchange.
— -- Surveillance video from inside an Oregon restaurant shows employees tackling a man accused of making a bomb threat.
The video -- obtained by ABC affiliate KATU -- shows Karl Bates, 55, walking into a Chang’s Mongolian Grill in Milwaukie, Oregon, Tuesday. Bates put a box on the counter, then leaned toward Tyler Coombes, who was working the register, and allegedly made threats if Coombes didn’t hand over cash.
But as Coombes started to comply, another employee, Timothy Hanra, walked through the door.
“I said, ‘This guy is not right, he’s wandering back and forth, he’s pacing,’” Hanra said.
Hanra jumped into action on the video, grabbing Bates from behind and, with the help of Coombes, wrestled him to the ground. Other employees jumped in to help subdue Bates.
Coombes grabbed the box from the counter and took it outside.
Police and bomb squad crews later arrived, evacuating the restaurant and detonating the box, which reportedly turned out not to be a real bomb.
Bates was arrested and charged with robbery, assault and possession of a hoax destructive device. He was being held on $250,000 bail, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's online inmate roster.
