— -- A California real estate mogul and philanthropist who was seriously wounded Friday as he left work may have been saved by his Rolls-Royce.

Police are hunting for the mysterious gunman who escaped on a bicycle.

Kameron Segal, the CEO of William Holdings Property Management and Acquisitions, was shot in his $300,000 Rolls-Royce Wraith. Nothing was reported stolen, leaving friends to wonder whether the shooting was a high-priced hit.

“It seems like there’s something behind it and, hopefully, we can get to the bottom of it,” friend Steve Castro said.

Segal, 48, was shot through one of the car’s windows, his friend said, hit in the neck and chest. The luxury car’s thick windows may have saved his life by slowing the impact of the bullets.

The shooting happened at about 8:40 p.m. Friday in Hollywood, just off of Sunset Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Police say Segal was leaving work and got into his car when the gunman fired twice into the car before riding away.

Police are examining surveillance videos near the crime scene. The motive remains unclear, and investigators only have a vague description of the gunman.

A possible lead involves conflicting reports that Segal was on his way downtown to close a $5 million real estate deal. To some of Segal’s friends, including Mytchell Mora, the circumstances of the deal mark another bizarre twist leading to more questions.

“In particular on a Friday night, making that that type of investment at 10, 11 p.m. at night; that to me just didn’t sound like Kameron,” Mora said.

Segal is expected to make a full recovery, and his friends say they’re putting together a reward for any information leading to an arrest in the shooting.
