‘Serial’ Among Radio/Podcast, News Productions to Get Peabody Honors
The Peabody awards for radio/podcast and news were announced today.
— -- Reports about Ebola, the race for the White House and the popular podcast series, ‘Serial,’ are among those honored today with 2014 Peabody awards in the News and Radio/Podcast categories.
There were seven winners in the Radio/Podcast categories. They are “Serial: Season One from Serial/This American Life/Chicago Public Media; “Reporting From The Frontlines: The Ebola Outbreak” by NPR; “Chris Christie, White House Ambitions and the Abuse of Power” by WNYC/New Jersey Public Radio; “NPR's Latino USA: Gangs, Murder, and Migration in Honduras” by Futuro Media Group, Round Earth Media, Radio Progreso, Freelance Producers. Reporting from WNYC, Minnesota Public Radio and State of the Re:Union and WJCT Public Broadcasting rounded out the category.
Other entertainment winners for 2014 include the American TV shows “Jane the Virgin” and “Fargo," and the British miniseries "The Honorable Woman."
Sir David Attenborough, British producer and conservationist, was recognized with the Peabody’s 2014 Individual Life Achievement honor for his six-decade career producing and hosting television programs about the natural world.
Among the winners in the News categories are VICE Media for it reports “The Islamic State” and “Last Chance High.” Other winners were CNN, MSNBC, Scripps Washington Bureau and KVUE News/ABC 24 in Austin, Texas.
Every year the Peabody organization recognizes excellence across platforms of radio, TV, and the Web, or "stories that matter," according to the organization. The awards are overseen by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Winners for documentary, web/interactive, public service, education and children’s programming will be announced on April 23.
The winners will receive their awards on May 31 at the organization’s 74th annual awards ceremony in New York City.
