Boxer Dies of Fight-Related Injuries

N E W   Y O R K, Junly 3 -- A 26-year-old boxer has died six days after hewas knocked unconscious during the final round of a televised bout.

Beethavean Scottland, of North Brentwood, Md., died Monday nightat Bellevue Hospital, said hospital spokesman John Clark. He hadundergone two operations to relieve pressure on his brain since theJune 26 fight. Scottland was knocked out by light-heavyweight George KhalidJones of Paterson, N.J., in the 10th round of the fight aboard theIntrepid Sea Air Space Museum.

Last-Minute Sub

Normally a super-middleweight, Scottland was a late replacementfor boxer David Telesco, who withdrew from the match after his nosewas broken during training. Jones, a left-hander, used a left to the back of the head tostagger Scottland and sent him down with a right to the head. Scottland was unconscious for several minutes, and was carriedout by paramedics on a stretcher. State boxing officials on Friday were reviewing a videotape ofthe bout, which is standard procedure after a fighter is seriouslyinjured. Dr. Barry Jordan, chief medical officer with the New YorkState Boxing Commission, said the review was conducted to see ifthere were any opportunities to stop the fight before Scotland wasseriously injured. The event was televised on ESPN2. More than 2,000 peopleattended the match.
