P A R K L A N D, Wash., May 18 -- One person was killed and another wounded in a shooting today at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., police said.

"Somebody shot someone else and then shot themselves," investigator John Reisch told The Associated Press at the Pierce County medical examiner'soffice.

The Pierce County medical examiner confirmed that one of the victims was killed while the other victim was airlifted to a local hospital with a head wound. Sources told ABC affiliate KOMO-TV that the person killed was a Pacific Lutheran University professor. Pierce County sheriffs said the alleged shooter was a man in his mid-50s and was not a student at the university. They said the shooter apparently left a note that outlined his intentions.

The gunfire erupted at 3 p.m. local time near a residence hall on the university. ABC affiliate KOMO-TV reported that witnesses said there were eight shots fired.

Greg Brewis, a Pacific Lutheran University spokesman, said the campus is calm, and school officials are briefing students at a campus auditorium.

Approximately 3,500 students are enrolled at Pacific Lutheran University, which is located in Tacoma, about 35 miles south of Seattle. The school, founded in 1890, offers liberal arts and professional programs and is affiliated with the EvangelicalLutheran Church in America.
