Suspects in Mississippi Police Shooting Make First Court Appearance
Two brother and two of their friends were arrested in connection to the crime.
— -- The four people arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of two Mississippi police officers during a traffic stop over the weekend appeared today at a court hearing.
Marvin Banks, 29, has been charged with two counts of capital murder, one count of grand theft auto and one count of felonious possession of a firearm, according to WDAM.
His girlfriend, Joanie Calloway, had initially been charged with two counts of murder as well, but her charges were lessened to one count of accessory after the fact during today's court hearing.
Cornelius Clark was charged with obstruction of justice and hindering prosecution, while Marvin Banks' brother Curtis was charged with one count of being an accessory after the fact to capital, authorities said.
Calloway and Clark had their bond set to $75,000, while Curtis Banks faces $100,000 bond. The Associated Press reported that the judge denied bond to Marvin Banks because he was previously convicted of a felony -- possession of a stolen gun -- in 2010.
All four are being held in the custody of the Forrest County Sheriff's Department and have not yet had to enter pleas, though the Banks brothers' mother told the Associated Press that she was trying to get lawyers for her sons.
She spoke to WDAM earlier today, saying that she believes her son was high on drugs at the time of the shooting.
"They still getting them pills," Mary Smith told WDAM, without specifying what kind of drugs they allegedly take.
