1. Oscar Pistorius Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Girlfriend's Shooting Death

Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison for the 2013 shooting death of his girlfriend, Judge Thokozile Masipa announced today. Masipa also handed down a suspended sentence of three years for a weapons charge.

Before announcing her decision, Masipa acknowledged that sentencing is "not a perfect exercise."

"A non-custodial sentence would send the wrong message to the community. But a long sentence would also not be appropriate, because it would lack mercy," she said.

2. Iconic Fashion Designer Oscar de la Renta Dies at 82

Iconic fashion designer Oscar de la Renta has died, a family member told ABC News. He was 82.

De la Renta was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.

Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, de la Renta left home at 18 to study painting in Madrid. It was there he developed a love of fashion design and began an apprenticeship with Cristóbal Balenciaga, who became his mentor, and then, landed a job with Lanvin in Paris. Soon after, he moved to New York City.

3. The Heartbreaking Poem a Nurse Who Cared for Duncan Wrote in Tribute

The last nurse to leave the hospital room where Thomas Eric Duncan died has written a poem about the Ebola patient, penned during the sleepless days after Duncan's death, a source told ABC News.

The source provided the poem to ABC News, noting that the nurse who wrote it asked to remain anonymous. Duncan, the first person in the United States to be diagnosed with Ebola, died at the Dallas hospital on Oct. 8. Two of the nurses who cared for Duncan -- Nina Pham, 26, and Amber Vinson, 29, have been diagnosed with Ebola.

4. The Scary Ways Online Dating Can Go Wrong

If you think you've had a bad experience with a date you met online, this California man probably has you beat.

A woman was arrested in Thousand Oaks over the weekend after firefighters rescued her from a man's chimney. She had been trying to break into the house and had gotten stuck, police said. The homeowner told Los Angeles station KABC he had met the woman, Genoveva Nunez-Figueroa, online and they had gone out on a few dates, but recently ended the relationship.

Sunday was the second time the woman was found on his roof, he told the station.

5. The World Series Begins Tonight

The Kansas City Royals are back in the World Series for the first time in 29 years.

The team won its last title on Oct. 27, 1985, topping the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. This time around, the San Francisco Giants stand in the way of Kansas City’s title hopes. The 2014 World Series opens tonight at Kauffman Stadium.

A lot has changed since the Royals last played in the World Series.
