The Conversation: Outsourcing Tutors
ABC's Stephanie Sy gets a lesson in the world of tutor outsourcing.
April 7, 2010— -- It used to be that kids in need of extra help with their math or English homework would head to the library or their dining room table with a tutor and hit the books.
Now a tutor is a click away, well, one very long click. A new company called TutorVista has taken the concept of outsourcing and applied it to tutors. For $99 a month, students, grade K-12, can get help in math, science or English from a series of tutors based in India. The program has held more than 4 million live tutoring sessions, according to the TutorVista Web site.
In today's Conversation, ABC News' Stephanie Sy spoke with a tutor from TutorVista about how the system works. Find out how the tutors overcome cultural and language barriers, and why they believe a student doesn't need face-to-face contact to learn. Sy even tests the system herself as she gets help with some basic geometry.
