Sept. 7, 2010— -- A new ABC News-Washington Post poll shows that Republicans have the edge on Democrats in the coming midterm elections, as GOP candidates ride a rising tide of voter dissatisfaction.

With two months to go before voters head to the polls, likely voters favor a Republican candidate over a Democratic candidate by 53 to 40 percent, the widest margin since tracking began in 1981.

More than 90 percent of Americans worry that the economy is in bad shape, and a majority now disapproves of the way President Obama is handling his job.

The poll shows broad rejection of the status quo, with about 78 percent of Americans saying they are dissatisfied with the way the federal government is working.
