April 7, 2010— -- Spirit Airlines said Tuesday it would begin to charge passengers for their carry-on luggage, becoming the first airline to slap such a fee on the flying public.

Beginning Aug. 1, any carry-on item placed in an overhead bin will incur a fee of $30 if paid in advance; the fee rises to $45 if paid at the gate. Customers will be allowed to bring smaller, "personal items" that fit under the seat at no cost.

While most airlines already charge for checked luggage, the new fee has raised eyebrows among industry watchers as a sign that airlines are going too far to raise extra money. It's too early to know if other airlines will follow suit. But if the program succeeds, other carry-on baggage fees could be coming soon.

So our question for you today: Would you be willing to pay extra for your carry-on baggage?
