Police List of Items Allegedly Stolen by Princess Diana's Butler
-- Princess Diana's longtime butler and confidant, Paul Burrell, was initially arrested on suspicion of theft in January of 2001, following a pre-dawn raid of his home in northwestern England. The police searched Burrell's residence for more than 12 hours and seized 342 items that they believe were stolen from Diana's apartment in Kensington Palace.
Burrell denies the charges against him. His attorney, Andrew Shaw, claims that Diana, trusting no one else, asked Burrell to store the seized items for her. The many photographs and letters found on the list seem to support that notion. Other items, like a letter opener (item 3) might well be a Royal hand-me-down.
It is in theory possible that Diana asked Burrell to store a Versace gown (item 234) and a Cartier clock (item 197) (for her). But what about an Indiana Jones whip (Schedule A, item 5 ) or a framed photo of Prince William with model Naomi Campbell (schedule C, item 20)? Included in the stash are two dozen items belonging to Prince Charles and Prince William.
Burrell will have much to explain when his trial begins on Oct. 14.
The official tally of the royal belongings allegedly pilfered by Burrell was made public and is listed below.
