ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the week’s No. 1 evening newscast in Total Viewers (7.761 million) for the week of July 4, 2016, based on Live +Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” beat “NBC Nightly News” (7.741 million) by 20,000 to win in Total Viewers for the 6th time in the last 8 weeks.
“World News Tonight” won Friday in Total Viewers by +339,000 over “NBC Nightly News” (7.559 million vs. 7.220 million) while Anchor David Muir reported from Dallas on the latest developments of the tragic shooting of law enforcement officers and civilians.
World News Tonight” improved week-to-week (7.513 million, 1.546 million and 1.125 million, respectively, w/o 6/27/16) in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+3%), Adults 25-54 (+12%) and Adults 18-49 (+12%), hitting 4-week highs in both key adult measures – since w/o 6/6/16.
“World News Tonight” turned in increases on the year-ago week (7.497 million and 1.214 million, respectively, for w/o 7/6/15) in Total Viewers (+4%) and Adults 18-49 (+4%), growing its overall viewer audience for the 3rd straight week.
“World News Tonight” narrowed its week-to-week margins with “NBC Nightly News” by double digits in Adults 25-54 (-35% - 227,000 vs. 350,000) and Adults 18-49 (-35% - 113,000 vs. 174,000).
Season to date, “World News Tonight” is improving versus the same point last season in Total Viewers (+37,000 - 8.489 million vs. 8.452 million). Growing for the 4th straight year, “World News Tonight” is delivering its largest overall viewer audience in 9 years – since the 2006-07 season.
“World News Tonight” is also narrowing its Total Viewer season margin with “NBC Nightly News” by double digits (-46% - 192,000 vs. 356,000) for the 2nd straight season, posting its closest overall viewer performance with the NBC program in 9 years – since the 2006-07 season.
For the week, “World News Tonight” led the “CBS Evening News” by 1.147 million Total Viewers, by 143,000 Adults 25-54 and by 138,000 Adults 18-49.
