'World News Tonight with David Muir' Is the No. 1 Newscast in America for 3 Weeks in a Row

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” won in Total Viewers (7.769 million) for the week of May 30, 2016, based on Live +Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.  “World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (7.705 million) by 64,000 to win for the 3rd week in a row and deliver its longest run at No. 1 in over 1 year – since weeks of 4/6 – 4/20/15.

“World News Tonight” improved over the prior week (1.671 million and 1.198 million, respectively, w/o 5/23/16) in Adults 25-54 (+3%) and Adults 18-49 (+3%), hitting a 5-week high in the key adult news demo –since w/o 4/25/16. 

Season to date, “World News Tonight” is improving versus the same point last season in Total Viewers (+24,000 - 8.567 million vs. 8.543 million).  Growing for the 4th straight year, “World News Tonight” is delivering its largest overall viewer audience in 9 years – since the 2006-07 season.

“World News Tonight” is also narrowing its Total Viewer season margin with “NBC Nightly News” by double digits (-37% - 230,000 vs. 367,000) for the 2nd straight season, posting its closest overall viewer performance with the NBC program in 8 years – since the 2007-08 season.

For the week, “World News Tonight” beat the “CBS Evening News” by 1.239 million Total Viewers, by 250,000 Adults 25-54 and by 234,000 Adults 18-49.

NOTE: Due to the Memorial Day holiday, all three programs were coded specials on Monday and each telecast is excluded from the averages.  In addition, due to the NBA Finals Game 1 on Thursday (6/2/16), “World News” was retitled “Wrld News Tonite” and is excluded from the averages.  ABC’s weekly averages are based on three days (Tue, Wed and Fri), while NBC’s and CBS’ weekly averages are based on four days (Tues-Fri).
