Armed Men Steal Corpse of Zetas Leader Heriberto Lazcano
The body was stolen by armed men who busted into a funeral home.
Oct. 9, 2012 -- The body of Zetas cartel leader, Heriberto "El Lazca" Lazcano, was stolen by armed men who busted into a funeral home, a Mexican official stated on Tuesday morning.
Earlier in the day, the Mexican Navy confirmed that it had killed the feared drug trafficker during a firefight in the state of Coahuila, which took place on Sunday evening.
On Tuesday morning Coahuila state Attorney General Homero Ramos held a brief press conference in which he addressed rumors that Lazcano's body had gone missing.
Ramos said that on Sunday evening, a body that had not been identified at that stage, was taken by local officials to a funeral home in the town of Sabinas, where a forensics team from the Attorney General's office, took fingerprints and pictures of the body and conducted an autopsy.
But at around 1:30 a.m. on Monday, just a few hours after the body had been studied, a group of armed men in masks busted into the funeral home, "subdued," its staff, and took the body in one of the funeral home's cars.
Ramos said that at 8:05 a.m. on Monday morning, the owner of the funeral home called the attorney general's office to report that the body had been stolen.
The fingerprints that had been taken from the body before it disappeared, confirmed that this was the corpse of Heriberto Lazcano.
