ABC’s Rick Klein on the Long Odds for Immigration Reform This Year
A crowded congressional calendar threatens to push immigration aside.
Sept. 4, 2013 -- After President Obama retook the White House last November, Republican strategists were quick to consider immigration reform as a way to make inroads with Hispanic voters.
Mitt Romney won just 27 percent of the Hispanic vote -- a drubbing compared with the 40 percent former President George W. Bush scored during his 2004 election.
But since then, immigration reform has stalled. A bill passed in Senate this June, but the Republican-controlled House of Representatives has acted sluggishly.
Now, several big-picture issues -- military action in Syria and the debt ceiling -- threaten to crowd out immigration in the Capitol through the rest of 2013.
For a look at what the future might hold for immigration reform, Fusion spoke with Rick Klein, political director at ABC News. Watch the video above for more.
