How Much Floyd Mayweather Earned From Saturday's Prize Fight
Floyd Mayweather thanked God and his sponsors after the boxing match.
-- Floyd Mayweather, the highest-paid athlete in the world, will get a 37 percent boost to his net worth after Saturday's fight, experts estimate.
Though many of the millions of boxing fans called Saturday's event in Las Vegas anti-climactic, Mayweather, 38, and Manny Pacquiao, 36, reaped big money from the richest prize fight in boxing history. The purse is an estimated $300 million, though the exact amount is unknown, according to Wealth-X, a research firm of ultra-high net worth individuals. What is known is the purse split is 60-40 in Mayweather’s favor.
Before the fight, Mayweather's net worth was an estimated $240 million, according to Wealth-X. The undefeated five-weight world champion may take home an estimated $180 million in revenue from the fight, including merchandise, arena tickets, sponsorship, broadcast sales and pay-per-view subscriptions, though many tuned into pirated content through Twitter's video streaming app Periscope.
About half of Mayweather's take will likely go to taxes.
Though Mayweather, whose nickname is "Money," didn't need sponsors to become the richest athlete in the past, he has said that he is open to having sponsors. After he won on Saturday, he thanked God and his sponsors. That included Hublot, the watch-maker whose name Mayweather wore around his waist. Mayweather's new net worth is estimated to be $330 million, according to Wealth-X.
Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, founder and CEO of Top Rank, said he will wire Pacquiao $50 million today for his guarantee, Forbes reported, while Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said that Mayweather’s guarantee will be “a lot more than the other guy.”
Pacquiao, a Filipino congressman, and six-time welter weight world champion, may pocket as much as $120 million, boosting his wealth by 36 percent to $300 million, Wealth-X estimates.
