Oprah Winfrey's 'Favorite Things' Episode Gifts Audience With New VW Beetle
Oprah Winfrey's favorite things episode included a new VW Beetle.
Nov. 22, 2010 -- From diamond earrings, an iPad and a brand new car, Oprah Winfrey succeeded for the last time at sending unexpecting audience members into hysterics during part two of her legendary "Ultimate Favorite Things" episode.
On the heels of part one of the episode, which aired last week, Winfrey shocked yet another group of guests with another round of gift giving in which hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of goodies were doled out.
"Oh yeah, oh yeah, I gotcha, I gotcha!" screamed Winfrey as fake snow began to fall over the stunned studio.
The first gift bestowed -- an Apple iPad -- came down from the ceiling flanked by angel wings as Winfrey explained that it is her "No. 1 favorite thing ever."
"I know it's wrong to be in love with a thing, and I don't normally recommend it," she said, proclaiming the popular gadget the "best invention of the century so far."
But the screams of the audience only escalated, peaking when Winfrey unveiled the never-before-seen 2012 Volkswagen Beetle, keys to which were given to each guest in the studio.
A massive gift box was opened to reveal the silhouette of the new car to the audience -- the first group in the world to get behind the wheel of the redesigned vehicle.
"The Beetles are coming!" screamed Winfrey.
Acknowledging that her "Favorite Things" shows are often mocked for their extravagance, Winfrey said, "You are all in a Saturday Night Live skit, but that's OK."
"It's not really about all the gifts," she said. "Although the stuff is really fun it really for me is about hope. It's about knowing that something really magical and joyful and wonderful can happen to you when you least expect it."
Winfrey also gave the audience several items of clothing, including a cashmere sweater and matching leggings from Magaschoni, which she dubbed "luxurious with a capital L."
Ugg boots covered in sequins and a patent-leather Coach bag that cost nearly $400 were handed out, as were jars of Winfrey's favorite moisturizer, Hope in a Jar by Philosophy.
Breaking into song, Winfrey belted out, "Deck the halls with bras aplenty, fa la la la la, la la la la," as she presented each guest with two $500 gift certificates to Nordstrom's lingerie department.
Oprah's Favorite Things Include Chicken Pies, Mini Croissants
Next up were some more of Winfrey's favorite food-related gifts, including a custom tin of Chicago's famed popcorn from Garrett's.
Explaining that she was in a "herb tizzy" before discovering a contraption that kept herbs, such as basil, fresh, Winfrey gave out the Herb-Savor by Prepara.
The audience also went home with Centerville Chicken Pies, presented by Harry and David, after Winfrey described her own experience with the dish as "love at first sight."
A custom set of Le Creuset cast iron pots and pans, plus its new line of stainless steel cookware, was also distributed to the audience -- carrying a price tag of nearly $600 per set.
Mini Croissants from Williams-Sonoma as well as an assortment of teas from Talbott Teas -- together with a matching tea set -- were also distributed.
For those who overindulge during the holiday season, Winfrey gave out a pair of Miraclebody Jeans by Miraclesuit.
Why? Because Winfrey says they "have a secret panel that holds in your tummy and, well, look at what they do for your butt!"
A ballerina then presented Oprah's audience with the Sophie Jewelry Box from Pottery Barn, which when opened displayed a pair of diamond Jessica Leigh earrings by Dana Rebecca Designs. Each pair has more than 100 diamonds.
Performances by some of Winfrey's favorite singers, Johnny Mathis and Josh Groban, helped finish the show, and audience members went home with each performer's new CD.
