2016 Oscars: Who Got Snubbed
Actors of color weren't the only ones snubbed at the 88th annual Academy Awards.
— -- As expected, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brie Larson took home the Academy Awards for best actor and actress, but there were still a few surprises at the 2016 Oscars.
Perhaps one of the biggest snubs of the night was Lady Gaga losing the Oscar for best song to Sam Smith.
Introduced by Vice President Joe Biden and joined on stage by dozens of sexual assault survivors, the singer earned a standing ovation for her powerful performance of "Til It Happens to You," from the documentary "The Hunting Ground." But she still lost to Smith, who gave a subtle and stirring performance of his song "Writing's on the Wall" from the James Bond film "Spectre."
Gaga wasn't the first to get snubbed, though. In the best supporting actor category, many thought Sylvester Stallone would win his first acting Oscar for reprising his role as Rocky Balboa in the "Rocky" reboot "Creed." Instead the 69-year-old actor was upset by three-time Tony winner Mark Rylance, who received his first Oscar nomination for playing the stoic Soviet agent Rudolf Abel in the Cold War drama "Bridge of Spies."
Stallone was the presumed favorite after winning the Golden Globe last month. He was first nominated playing Rocky at the 1977 Academy Awards.
In the best picture category, the race was more of a tossup, with "Spotlight" gaining momentum in recent weeks. Still, it was something of an upset when "The Revenant" did not take the trophy after its star DiCaprio and director Alejandro Iñárritu won Oscars. Instead, "Spotlight" earned the ultimate prize, best picture, after losing in the supporting categories but winning for best original screenplay.
