2017 Billboard Music Awards: Winners list

Drake led the list of winners at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.

— -- Drake was the big winner at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, breaking Adele's record for the most awards in a year.

Drake, a Canadian rap artist, went into Sunday night's broadcast on ABC having already won 10 awards. Early in the night, he took home the award for top male artist. That was soon followed by top 200 Billboard album. He broke Adele's record with the final award of the night, top artist.

Drake was both feeling the love and passing it on.

"We've got to show love while we're here," he said accepting the award for top 200 album, before going on to compliment co-host Vanessa Hudgens, bury the hatchet with Ludacris and tell Nicki Minaj, "I'm so glad we found our way back." He also gave a shout out to his dad, who wore a purple suit and shoes for the occasion.

The rap star received 22 nominations this year, just behind the Chainsmokers, who led the nominations with 23. The Chainsmokers took home the first award of the night.

Accepting the award for top collaboration for their song "Closer" with Halsey, they said the song was written "in the back of a tour bus" and was meant just for their friends.

Beyonce led among female artists, garnering five wins before the broadcast, including top female artist and top R&B artist. Twenty One Pilots was awarded four trophies, including one for top duo or group, and the Chainsmokers earned three, including top dance or electronic artist.

Ludacris was back as host for a second year in a row, with a new co-host, Hudgens.

"The Billboard Awards is like ... it's like the Oscars of music," Ludacris said at last year's show.
