Top 5 Celebrities Famous for ... Nothing
Their talents? Questionable, but these 5 know how to make a name from partying.
June 5, 2009 -- The job is enviable: parties galore, free-flowing drinks, comped clothing and hotel suites.
The qualifications? Strut the red carpet, smile for the flashing lights, repeat ad nauseam.
Members of Hollywood's fastest growing group of celebrities credit their fame to doing pretty much nothing of substance. Maybe they served a season on a reality show. Maybe they recorded a song way back when. Maybe they starred in a sex tape or two. Whatever the case, they accomplished enough to get invited to one C-list party and parlayed that into a career of publicity appearances.
Below, meet five faces who've turned 15 seconds of fame into a professional life of partying:
Peaches Geldof
Don't know her by name? Surely you know Peaches Geldof by her type: tall and blond with a wardrobe that attracts both attention and questions, famous more for her family associations than for any of her personal projects (starring in a reality TV special about her teenage years). The 20-year-old London-bred wild child is the daughter of singer Bob Geldof and British TV host Paula Yates. She was questioned by security chiefs at a London store in 2006 on suspicion of shoplifting, and was photographed topless and showing off her nearly two dozen tattoos on a beach earlier this year. She parties so much, she gets paid for it. According to the Daily Mail, Geldof makes in the ballpark of 2,500 to 5,000 pounds to attend nightclub, restaurant and gallery openings.
Paris Hilton
Britain's got Geldof and we'll always have Paris -- Hilton, that is, the original purveyor of the do-nothing celebrity lifestyle. The would-be heiress to the Hilton hotel fortune went from rich-man's daughter to scandal-stirring socialite in 2004, when a sex tape starring her hit the online market. Hilton parlayed her first film role into several other, often regrettable, movie appearances. Her role as Paige Edwards in 2005's "House of Wax" won her a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress. Her alleged apathy and failure to promote the 2006 flop "Pledge This!" landed her in court, in a trial set to begin June 8 -- investors claim Hilton's failure to abide by her contractual obligation to plug the straight-to-DVD sorority movie resulted in a loss of roughly $8.3 million.
It's just the latest legal mess for the 28-year-old Hilton. In 2007, she served a 45-day jail sentence for DUI and probation violations. Hilton told Larry King her jail stint reformed her and inspired her to pursue work that will help others, but so far, it seems the only cause she's helping is her own profile and bank account. According to documents from the "Pledge This!" lawsuit against her obtained by The Smoking Gun, between 2006 and 2007, Hilton banked more than $22 million pushing perfume, Prosecco, clothing and other products. She also made $150,000 for appearing at a Las Vegas nightclub's '07 Halloween party.
Kim Kardashian
One of Hilton's cronies also counts her ability to court attention on the fact that once upon a time, she starred in a sex tape. Kim Kardashian became the behind known 'round the world when a sex tape of her and R&B singer Ray J hit the Internet in 2007. Kardashian, the daughter of O.J. Simpson attorney Robert Kardashian, parlayed that burst of notoriety into a reality show that chronicles the craziness of her family: "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."
She turned that into a stint on "Dancing With the Stars" and a starring role in a series of exercise DVDs. But the 28-year-old celebutante's most recognizable role is on the red carpet of many a C-list event, smiling for photographers and striking her signature three-quarter-turn pose, the better to get a get a good shot of the rear end that made her famous.
Brody Jenner
They may not be related by blood, but Kardashian's step brother, Brody Jenner, certainly takes after her in the fame-mongering department. The 25-year-old son of Olympic decathlon champion Bruce Jenner tried and failed launching his own reality TV series, "The Princes of Mailbu," before dating his way into the bold-faced name club, most famously hooking up with "Hills" star Lauren Conrad. Jenner's "Hills'" stint won him his own MTV show, "Bromance," in which seemingly self-esteem deprived dudes vied to win the title of Brody's BFF. These days, Jenner can be found out and about on the party circuit with his latest love interest, Jayde Nicole, Playboy's 2008 Playmate of the Year.
Kevin Federline
Were it not for Britney Spears' bad judgment, the world might never know Kevin Federline. The 31-year-old dancer went from the back rows of Spears' dance squad to the cover of the tabloids when she married him in 2004. They quickly had two kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, before launching one of Hollywood's most highly publicized divorces in 2006.
Federline's fame has since dwindled down to starring in a commercial for Nationwide's "Life Comes at You Fast" ad campaign and appearing on professional wrestling shows. Still, he reportedly banked $175,000 from the Las Vegas nightclub Pure for throwing his 30th birthday bash there. But thanks to Spears' antics, Federline, who retains custody of their children, carries around a title more redeeming than professional partier. Details magazine named him Father of the Year in 2007.
