Taylor Swift: Kanye West Called, 'Was Very Sincere in His Apology'

Sept. 15, 2009 — -- If anyone's equipped to bring Kanye West and Taylor Swift together two days after the mic-grab heard 'round the world, it's the ladies of "The View." (After all, when Barbara Walters and Whoopi Goldberg command you to hug it out, how can you say no?)

And indeed, after Swift appeared solo on the ABC daytime talk show today to share her thoughts on West's outburst at Sunday's MTVs Video Music Awards, in which he climbed on stage and interrupted her Best Female Video acceptance speech to say, "Yo Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'm gonna let you finish, but Beyonce [Knowles] had one of the best videos of all time," she got a call from the rapper herself.

Representatives from "The View" said West called Swift after her appearance on today's show, and she accepted his apology. Swift later told ABC News Radio, "Kanye did call me and he was very sincere in his apology, and I accepted that apology."

During the broadcast, Swift recounted what went through her head during the VMA debacle.

"My overall thought process went something like, 'Wow, I can't believe I won, this is awesome, don't trip and fall, I'm going to get to thank the fans, this is so cool, oh, Kanye West is here. Cool haircut, what are you doing there?'" the 19-year-old country singer said today. "And then, 'Ouch,' and then, 'I guess I'm not gonna get to thank the fans.'"

Asked if she would accept an apology from the rapper, Swift said, "Sure," but added, "he has not personally reached out or anything."

She went on: "I'm not gonna say that I wasn't rattled by it, but I had to perform live five minutes later so I had to get myself back to the place where I could perform. ... All the other artists that came and showed me love in the hours following it, all the people tweeting, all of the fans ... it was wonderful to see all these people defending me so that I didn't have to."

Co-host Goldberg quipped, "Well, I'm sure if Kanye's watching, he'll know what to do."

West did, in fact, apologize multiple times before calling Swift personally.

He posted a rambling apology last Sunday night on his blog that stated, in part, "I'M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD'VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED!"

The next day, he took to Kanyeuniversecity.com, again, to compare the incident to the movie "Meet the Parents."

"I feel like Ben Stiller in 'Meet the Parents' when he messed up everything and Robert De Niro asked him to leave," West wrote. "That was Taylor's moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry."

West expressed more regret in a Monday night appearance on "The Jay Leno Show." When Leno asked West what his mother, who passed away last year, would have thought about the incident, a long, awkward pause ensued.

"I immediately knew in the situation that it was wrong," West told Leno. "And it was very -- it was just -- it was rude, period. ... I'd like to be able to apologize to her in person.

"I need to, after this, take some time off and just analyze how I'm going to make it through the rest of this life," he added, "how I'm going to improve."

If today's apology is any indication, he's already starting to figure that out.
