Hope for Haiti: Stars Line Up for Tonight's Telethon

Jan. 22, 2010— -- The stars are aligning for Haiti.

Madonna and Beyonce have just signed on for tonight's "Hope for Haiti" telethon, joining some of the biggest names in music and Hollywood, including Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, Bono, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio.

"Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief," a two-hour telethon organized by actor George Clooney, will air live at 8 p.m. tonight on all four broadcast networks, dozens of cable channels and various Web sites.

The worldwide response to the Jan. 12 earthquake, which may have claimed as many as 200,000 lives, has been overwhelming, with more than $1 billion in aid contributed so far. And tonight's star-studded telethon is expected to bring in even more.

Clooney told "Entertainment Tonight" that he's been up "three days straight" putting together the broadcast, and will officially donate $1 million from his own pockets during the telecast.

While Clooney holds down the fort in Los Angeles, Haitian native Wyclef Jean will host from New York. CNN's Anderson Cooper will report from Port-au-Prince throughout the night.

Stars will be filmed in multiple locations.

Here's a list of who's expected to perform:

New York: Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Mary J. Blige, Shakira, Jennifer Hudson and Wyclef Jean.

Los Angeles: Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow and John Legend.

London: Jay-Z, Bono and The Edge, Rihanna and Coldplay.

Haiti Telethon Not Expecting Kanye

Notably absent from the list is Kanye West. Though Internet rumors that West had been banned from the broadcast because he criticized then-President George Bush during a 2005 telethon for Hurricane Katrina victims appear to be false, West has reportedly not responded to requests to appear on the show.

Some of the presenters and speakers expected to appear include Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Drew Barrymore, Halle Berry, Morgan Freeman, Oprah Winfrey, Samuel L. Jackson, President Bill Clinton, Jon Stewart and Robert Pattinson

Beginning Saturday, viewers can purchase the night's musical performances for 99 cents each through iTunes. All proceeds will go to Haiti relief.

Reportedly tracks by Rihanna, Linkin Park, Jay-Z and Bono are being created for purchase online, and Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones are also said to be working on a "We Are the World" re-make.

Funds raised from the telethon will be donated to several relief organizations, including UNICEF, Oxfam America and Partners in Health.

Even before tonight's telethon, celebrities have come up with ways to help the people of Haiti since the earthquake struck Jan. 12.

In just one day, through messages posted on Twitter, Jean was able to raise $1 million for his Yele Haiti Foundation, which he was later forced to defend.

Us Weekly reported that DiCaprio has donated $1 million to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund (CBHF) to support near-term assistance and long-term recovery efforts.

Sandra Bullock, Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Not On Our Watch, an advocacy and grantmaking group founded by Clooney, Pitt and others have each given $1 million.

Other celebrities are teaming up with eBay to raise money. Scarlett Johannson is offering tickets to opening night of her Broadway play, "A View from the Bridge," along with a chance to meet her at the after party. Stephen Colbert is auctioning off his interview table from "The Colbert Report" and Jillian Michaels has put up her motorcycle from "The Biggest Loser."

Customers on eBay can also donate directly through the Give@Checkout Program which has already rasied $760,000.
