Kelsey Grammer Recovering After Heart Attack
Kelsey Grammer, 53, suffered a mild heart attack after paddleboarding in Hawaii.
June 2, 2008 -- Actor Kelsey Grammer is recovering after suffering a mild heart attack Saturday, according to his publicist.
"Grammer experienced symptoms Saturday morning after paddle boarding with his wife Camille at their Hawaiian home," Stan Rosenfield said in a statement. "Grammer was immediately taken to an area hospital where it was determined that he had a mild heart attack."
"He will be released from the hospital early this week," he said.
Grammer, 53, is best known for playing radio psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane on "Cheers" and its spinoff, "Frasier."
He took a break from TV in 2004 after "Frasier" went off the air and returned last fall for the now canceled Fox sitcom "Back to You." He's slated to play an outrageous, overbearing father in the upcoming ABC comedy "Roman's Empire."
While Grammer does not have a history of heart trouble, he has had well-chronicled problems with drug and alcohol addiction. He went to rehab for alcohol abuse in 1990 but became addicted to cocaine following his release.
"I think just -- it took me to the place where I felt like I was at the edge," he said about his cocaine use in an interview with Larry King in 2001. "And I like living there, and that's the place where I like to be."
"But the truth is, I've ripened to a place in my life where I no longer need that, and I don't want it," he said later, noting that he had been clean for five years. "And that the 'natural,' as they say, is the greatest high."
