Mindy McCready Hospitalized After Possible Drug Overdose
Troubled country star Mindy McCready treated for possible drug overdose.
May 25, 2010 -- Country singer Mindy McCready was hospitalized in Florida today after a possible overdose of prescription medication.
McCready, 34, was found unconscious at her mother's home in North Fort Myers after taking a painkiller and muscle relaxant, according to the Naples Daily News.
Later in the day, one representative said McCready was taking painkillers after breaking a toe two days ago. In an e-mail, McCready's publicist Kathi Atwood, confirmed the singer was in the hospital, and said the diagnosis has not been confirmed. "The family asks for your respect of their privacy andappreciates your thoughts and prayers at this time," wroteAtwood.
Another representative for MCready, Brent Young, told TMZ that McCready may have had a bad reaction to the painkiller Darvocet and her mom called 911. "She can't believe her mom did this," Young said.
Over the years, the country crooner has received more media attention for her troubled personal life than her music.
"You know what, I don't think I'm ever going to be one of those people that has a normal, quiet existence," McCready told ABC Radio last month. "I've been chosen for some reason to be bigger and larger than life in every way. Negative and positive."
McCready is locked in a contentious court battle with her mother, Terri, over custody of her 4-year-old son, Zander.
Terri McCready was appointed to be the boy's legal guardian in 2007 after Mindy was arrested for violating probation on a drug-related charge.
Following a custody hearing in Fort Myers on May 19, McCready released a statement, saying, "We have progressed in a positive manner to reunite me and my son, Zander. I feel very optimistic this will happen in the near future."
Zander's father is McCready's ex-boyfriend Billy McKnight.
This year, McCready's struggle with substance abuse was broadcast on the third season of "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew."
McCready also claimed to have carried on a decade-long affair with baseball star Roger Clemens that began was she was 15 years old and he was 28. Clemens, a former Boston Red Sox pitcher known as "the Rocket," denied that the relationship was sexual in nature.
In the interview with ABC Radio's Hunter Kelly, McCready said she doesn't believe her actions are necessarily to blame for all her troubles. "It's just crazy. My life has always been this way, and people say, 'Do you cause that? Do you make that? Is this something that you are out there…. Is this your fault?'
"And really, honestly, I think that question's so stupid," McCready continued. "Life, I believe, is already dictated of what choices you're going to make. I think God knows what road you're going to take."
