'Alaskan Bush People': 5 Things to Know About the Show
Two of the show's stars were sentenced to 30 days in jail this week.
-- Earlier this week, "Alaskan Bush People" stars Billy and Joshua Brown were sentenced to 30 days in jail for allegedly lying and applying for funds they weren't qualified for, according to the Associated Press.
Billy Brown spoke out after the ruling and accepted blame on behalf of his family.
For better or worse, the jail time elevated an already popular show into the mainstream.
Here are five things to know about "Alaskan Bush People":
1 - Born and Raised in the Wild
According to the official Discovery website, the show follows the Brown family, who lives in the deep wilderness and "was born and raised wild."
The family is "so far removed from civilization that they often go six to nine months of the year without seeing an outsider" and "all nine sleep together in a one-room cabin," according to Discovery.
2 - There Are 10 Members of the Brown Family (if you count Mr. Cupcake, the dog)
The heads of the household are Billy and his wife Ami. Then there's Gabe, Noah, Joshua, aka "Bam Bam," Solomon, aka "Bear," Matt, Snowbird, Rain and finally Mr. Cupcake, the family pet.
3 - The Backstory
Billy Brown, 63, moved to the wilderness 34 years ago after a family tragedy. Brown grew up in Texas but lost his entire immediate family in a place crash.
Brown was very young when he lost his family, but after meeting Ami, the couple decided it would be best to raise a family in Alaska.
"Our kids are with us with everything we do and we teach them what the world is really about," Brown say in a video clip on the Discovery site.
4 - The "Bush" Is Dangerous
Along with living with seizures and having to recently visit a medical specialist, Billy Brown also has to bear-proof his home against unwanted animal invaders when the family travels.
In one clip, the Brown family comes back to find their cabin ransacked.
"I would hate for the girls or one of us to be inside the house tonight and have [the bear] come back," a concerned Brown says.
5 - Third Season
The third season began last November and in a preview clip, you can see it's action-packed.
The family shows viewers how to survive in the wild, track bears and hunt "wolf pack" style. Family members are also dealing with health issues.
