Andy Grammer Dishes on 'Dancing With the Stars' Prep
"It's really hard," he said, "but it's hard to even complain about it."
-- Honey, he's good, but things keep getting better for Andy Grammer.
After two memorable appearances on "Dancing With the Stars" last season, the "Honey, I'm Good" singer has joined the cast as a competitor, though he doesn't necessarily think being attuned to music will help him move better in the ballroom.
"I mean, for me to say right now that I have any sort of advantage is hilarious," he told ABC News. "It's really hard to do. Like, I've had two rehearsals and it's really, really hard."
Grammer is one of several musicians competing on the ABC dancing show this season, along with R&B legend Chaka Khan, Tamar Braxton and Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys.
So which of his fellow musicians is he most intimidated by?
"I guess the one that you think of quick is Nick Carter, 'cause he's done a lot of dancing, right?" he said. "But it's so different than just any sort of like hip-hop dancing or anything like that. But sure, I'm scared of Nick Carter!"
Luckily, Grammer has the inside track on the series. The singer, 31, told ABC News he actually turned to another musician for advice before he signed on: his pal Gavin DeGraw, who competed on season 14.
"I definitely texted [him] and was like, 'Dude, how did it go? Was it cool, is this a good move?' and he texted me right back, like, 'Everybody over there is incredible, they're super nice, it was a really great experience for me,'" he said. "So yeah, all I've heard is really good things for the show."
"You know what's funny, I was talking to one of the dancers," he added, "And they were like ... they want to make the experience really good for you, so that you go and tell other people that they should be on the show."
Grammer's main inspiration for doing the show, though, was his late mom, whom he lost to breast cancer several years back. She loved to dance, and loved watching dance shows on TV.
"She loved ... Apollo Anton Ohno," he recalled of her favorite "Dancing" competitor. "Yeah, I remember her talking a lot about that, she liked him a lot."
This season, other celebrities competing on "Dancing With the Stars" include Gary Busey, Paula Deen, Victor Espinoza, Hayes Grier, Bindi Irwin, Alexa and Carlos PenaVega, Alek Skarlatos and Kim Zolciak Biermann. The series returns Sept. 14.
