Will Arnett Reveals Alcohol Relapse While Filming New Netflix Show
Arnett, 45, produced and stars in the new Netflix TV show "Flaked."
-- Will Arnett is opening up about his previous alcohol addiction and the relapse he went through while working on his new Netflix show.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Arnett opened up about his past battle with alcoholism and confessed to recently breaking 15 years of sobriety while working on his new Netflix show "Flaked."
"Hardly anybody knows this, but I started drinking again," he said.
Arnett explained that his addiction to alcohol goes back to his days as a voice-over actor, when he was trying to get his big break in the industry. The "Arrested Development" actor admitted that during his off-hours he would spend a large amount of time and money drinking at a local bar.
"I could've gone to law school a couple of times over with the time and money I spent in that place," Arnett said. "And it would get earlier and earlier. It'd be like 4 p.m., and the weekends would start on Wednesdays," he said. "And it didn't matter if I was hungover because I could roll out of bed and go do a voiceover. Or at least I'd [tell myself that] at 3 a.m."
Arnett, 45, explained that since his recent relapse, he's been clean for a few months now, and noted that he's back in AA meetings to help him navigate his battle with alcoholism.
"I described it at a meeting recently like a whistle off in the distance for a train you know is coming for you," Arnett said. "It was a bummer, but it happens. And for me, it happened as easily as it had [the first time]."
The decision to stop drinking this time around came from Arnett reflecting on his past as well as putting his family first.
"I just know where this path goes, and it's a dead end," Arnett said. "I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but I'm smart enough to know that this is not where I want to live. And I'm a dad now, a parent first and foremost."
